Walking into the new Horseshoe Casino in downtown Baltimore is an awe inspiring sight and the music from the live band can be heard everywhere on both levels of the casino as the 14Forty bar is in the center with no solid walls or ceiling. The bar serves alcohol 24 hours, 7 days a week with live bands most nights. The sound is excellent with a sound man right behind me in this picture. Also behind me are sofas and chairs to sit on to watch the bands and enjoy the attention of pretty girls in shorts taking your drink orders. This was Wednesday and the band was Green River from New York, an outstanding Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band who not only did their well known hits but filled my expectations by performing their early blues songs and covers like "I Put A Spell on You' , Suzie Q, Night Time is the Right Time etc which really made me happy. The lead singer actually had the sound of John Fogerty and he traded some really great guitar solos with Randy Light, the other guitarist in some extended jams just as CCR did. The bar and the seats were mostly empty on this weekday evening as most people are there to gamble. People would come in for a short while, sit or dance than leave. In the few weeks this casino has been opened they have already had such great regional blues bands as the Nighthawks and Shirletta Settles from DC's Blue Monday series. There is also a covered stage at the entrance of the casino. This is where Tom Principato will be playing this Sunday (see below).

Last time I saw the Sister Blue Band was at the Rendezvous in Perryville before it burned down in a fire in December 2010 so I was really looking forward to hearing this incredible soulful singer who really sounds like Janis Joplin reincarnated though don't ask her to sing Bobby McGee. She told someone who asked her last Friday at the new River City Blues and Dark Room in Harrisburg "I would rather stick sharp needles in my eyes!" LOL This is similar to what she said in Perryville years before. She sings a few covers but mostly the great originals from her albums which I have. She is also truly outstanding on the guitar as is Mark Furman on the right which is why it was definitely worth the hour and a half drive to go to this new bar which is in a good size room with plenty of tables and chairs and had a sound board with a dedicated sound man. After two weekends the bar is still struggling to be profitable and needs our support to survive. This Friday they will have the Porkroll Project from Philly, a six piece band with harmonica and probably the only band you will every see that has two keyboard players. Georgie "The Blacksmith" Bonds will be the guest singer.

A sold out crowd of around 200 showed up for this unique soul show which was part of the live broadcast on WTMD of "The Dirty Soul Party" a weekly show that comes on Saturday's at 9pm immediately following Bob Sekinger's Roadhouse show which starts at 6pm. Though I got there early I couldn't find the room that Bob was broadcasting from but Scott Mullins the host of the soul party show had his table with two turntables set up in the packed room next to the stage with a stack of rarely seen 7 inch 45 rpm records! He was playing some great R&B, soul and funk dance music but there just wasn't enough room to dance with out poking people or stepping on their foot which a drunk guy next to me kept doing. The house band that backed the guest singers was The Bellevederes, a band I had seen a few times and believe they are one of the best R&B bands in Baltimore with a 3 piece horn section, keyboard and two female lead singers. Above is Sheila Ross of the Royelettes who opened the show. The headliner was Softones a trio who sang in three part harmony but without a doubt the star of the night was Winfield Parker, the one who went on before the Softones and despite currently being treated for cancer gave the most energetic, lively and entertaining performance of the night. I have video and pictures from all three events that will go up soon.
